Why playing time rarely looks fair

After the game, playing times get compared — by players and parents alike. And more is read into them than they actually say. Because splitting playing time fairly is harder than it looks, even if you had nothing else to think about. No player carries a stopwatch on their back, and still the question comes up why Max played two minutes longer than Tom.

Try it yourself — we will make it easy: split forty minutes evenly across twelve players, so everyone ends up with exactly 16:40 on the court. One game minute takes one second here. You can substitute as often as you like, but never more than three players at once. At the end, we add up how much was played too much or too little.

We count the total deviation from an even split. The smaller the value, the fairer the rotation. The list is anonymous and carries no names.
